Twin Sister create the kind of hypnotic pop you’ve been dreaming about since Galaxie 500 fizzled, cut with Tusk-era Fleetwood Mac thump, and a shot of Lynchian weirdness for good measure. They’re slack yet focused, a spark in the dark distance on a desert highway where speed is relative. Formed in Long Island two years ago, Twin Sister want to make music which you could feel comfortable cheating on someone to.

West End Motel is a conglomerate of losers and poets and hobo-sexuals. Tom Cheshire met Brent Hinds in Atlanta on a corner under a bridge in 1993. They were panhandling and drinking cough syrup, and songs just started spewing out of them. Songs were written on an acoustic guitar and a bucket for drums, with the occasional toy piano in the background. Much booze was consumed and late nights turned into early mornings. They write and sing for the underdog and the everyday person. The music is honest, like a Filipino kid tap dancing in the wind. Throw Mike Shina, Stiff Penalty and Ben Thrower into the mix and you got yourself a good time. These men love music, it is that simple, and they write for people who love music. They write songs of love and loss and laughter. The new album “Only Time Can Tell” comes out in October, 2012.

Thursday, August 23rd, 6:30pm: You Won’t w/ Paper Castles

You Won’t is an indie-folk outfit from Massachusetts but their sound is genre defying. They pull from the worlds of folk, indie-rock, garage rock, soul, and blues. You Won’t is a venerable music chameleon. No matter what genre they find themselves in, it seems to fit. Although they are sound shifters, they don’t let themselves get bogged down with too much instrumentation. This allows them to produce songs of various genres while retaining a sound that is unique to them.http://youwontyouwont.com

“To his credit — particularly as a young songwriter — Reagan’s stylistic influences are often difficult to directly identify… [his] guitar work is nothing short of beautiful…an unquestionably unique local talent” – Dan Bolles, Music Editor, Seven Days Newspaper

Burlington City Arts, along with MSR Presents and Angioplasty Media present a free concert series in August in City Hall Park, featuring regional indie rock bands and a cash bar from Long Trail Brewing at The BCA Center.
These days, John Bates’ latest project, Big Black Delta recently toured nationally and recorded with M83. Bates started the band Mellowdrone in Los Angeles, who put out several EPs independently as well as an LP on Columbia Records. Bates decided to take a long break from the “band” aesthetic, and strived to create something different, without any rules, in hope it could expand his consciousness. He bought a used laptop from close friend, Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails, SONOIO) and began sound-designing and circuit-bending to make original, simple music. By doing everything slightly wrong in the studio, on purpose, Bates set out to make music that wasn’t bound by gravity. He didn’t limit himself instrumentally either. “Give me anything, and I’ll make it work. Especially if it’s stringed,” Bates noted. This musical re-discovery, combined with Bates’ favorite dinner table conversation, UFO folklore, and the Big Black Delta project was born. http://bigblackdelta.com/

Snakefoot, the moniker under which Ross Travis produces and performs, sounds like a melding of hip hop, house, footwork, and roots dubstep. Live performances utilize an ever changing system of computers, synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers. http://soundcloud.com/snakefoot

“By realizing that following the footsteps of your elders is deeper than looking or sounding like them, they’ve managed to make one of the best, classically ‘rock’ albums in recent memory. It’s all about going back to what it was all about in the first place: making a mess of the status quo.” – Ad Hoc

“Their piano-driven instrumentals still combine new age music, Krautrock, and classic rock, and on most of the new Valley Tangents (Drag City), especially ‘Opium Den/Fade to Blue,’ you can hear the influence of their pastoral environment: it’s got a kind of backwoodsy Cluster aesthetic, emphasizing meditative noodling and rolling rhythms that make you wish for a hammock, damn it. ” – Chicago Reader“the duo seems to relish the freedom that comes with feeding their experimental streak. Cho, a classically trained prodigy, flexes her piano chops more overtly on the new album, along with synthesized flourishes that suggest Ars Electronica as much as Eno. Waterhouse, meanwhile, is a punk-rock guitarist at heart, squeezing out tasteful phrases and dissonant wails through a veil of overdriven fuzz. ” – Time Out New York

“Imagine a robot jazz band falling in with a group of wandering minstrels and blissing out to the view of mountains on the horizon.” – Philadelphia City Paper
